15 Years of Support for Multiple Myeloma Research

Sponsor or Join Team Lorraine’s In-person Walk on June 18, 2023

Lorraine has been living with cancer for over 15 years. She was first diagnosed in 2008 after the birth of her third child and given a prognosis of three to seven years. She received an experimental treatment and several surgeries that resulted in a long remission, but that eventually ended. Treatment was scheduled for spring 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In summer 2021, she had a few months of chemo, another stem cell transplant, lots of rest, and a maintenance dose of chemo. The medical team says that she is progressing well and that the goal is to get Lorraine into remission again, as they continue researching and developing a cure. She has been back to work for over a year now and enjoying every day with her friends and family.

Lorraine’s immunity is getting stronger and she feels comfortable about rejoining the public event and walking down University Avenue with the team past the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, remains incurable but is now very treatable

Multiple Myeloma is now very treatable thanks to the research and development of new drug treatments funded in part by our walk. The funds raised by Team Lorraine make an incalculable difference in advancing Princess Margaret Cancer Centre research in its core strengths including diagnostics, antibody treatment, immunotherapies and cell-free genomics. The research is advancing quickly and they are hopeful that they will find a cure for multiple myeloma in our lifetime. That is very encouraging!!

The lives of patients depend on continued research. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has achieved an international reputation as a global leader in the fight against cancer and delivering personalized cancer medicine. We are proud to contribute to these efforts.

Walking virtually in 2021

Team Lorraine is back and stronger than ever in our 14th year of walking to raise funds for Multiple Myeloma research via The Molly & David Bloom Chair at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. We are committed to raising awareness and bringing hope to Multiple Myeloma patients and their families. Join us virtually on Sunday, September 11, 2022 or sponsor our team.

Our founder, Lorraine McCallum, has been living with cancer for over 14 years. She completed her second round of treatment for Multiple Myeloma in the past year. Treatment was expected to begin in spring 2020 but was delayed due to COVID-19. The doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital continued to monitor her closely, and started Lorriane on chemotherapy last summer, followed by a stem cell transplant in October, several months of recovery and she is back to work now. The medical team says that she is progressing well and that the goal is to get Lorraine into remission again, as they continue researching and developing a cure. The research is advancing quickly and they are hopeful that they will find a cure for multiple myeloma in our lifetime. That is very encouraging!!

Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, remains incurable but is now very treatable thanks to the research and development of new drug treatments made possible by the generosity of our supporters.  If you are unable to participate in our walk, we appreciate any and all donations made to support our cause.  Lorraine’s life truly depends on continued research. Together, we can make a difference.

Together, Apart: Team Lorraine 2020, COVID Edition.

Team Lorraine joined The Weekend to Conquer Cancer for 2021!

It is our 13th year raising funds for Multiple Myeloma research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Team Lorraine and the MM5K Multiple Myeloma M-Moving Together Toward the Cure have joined forces with The Weekend to Conquer Cancer for a 5k virtual walk on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Lorraine has been living with cancer for over 13 years

Our friend Lorraine was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow, days after giving birth to her third daughter, Katerina. Her spine badly damaged from the cancer, Lorraine was in constant pain, but she did not give up. Barely able to walk, she started Team Lorraine to raise money to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Lorraine’s cancer was in remission for many years, but she will be starting another round of aggressive treatments this year. Now more than ever, we need to raise even more dollars to discover new treatments and ultimately a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Funds raised by Team Lorraine support the Molly & David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret, the only myeloma chair in Canada. A dedicated research chair ensures that Princess Margaret patients have the latest treatments and shares Princess Margaret research with other doctors worldwide.

Please help Team Lorraine:

Any contributions make a huge impact and are greatly appreciated.

In 2020, Team Lorraine raised over $18,500 in support of The Molly & David Bloom Chair for Multiple Myeloma Research at The Princess Margaret.

$17,000 raised for Multiple Myeloma research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

For the 10th year in a row, the amazingly dedicated members of Team Lorraine walked or ran 5 km on University Avenue in downtown Toronto. While the team was a bit smaller this year, we managed to make it into the top 10 fundraising teams, raising $17,000 for Multiple Myeloma (MM) research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

You can still sponsor us until midnight on Sunday, September 30.

Thank you to all our generous sponsors who are helping us to support the incredible research of the Molly & David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma, ensuring that MM patients have the latest treatments and sharing Princess Margaret Cancer Centre research with other doctors worldwide. The generosity of our sponsors is enabling Princess Margaret Hospital to bring more drugs to market at a faster pace for the benefit of patients, increasing the odds that Lorraine’s treatment will be a success.

Lorraine and family

Lorraine and her family made the early morning drive from Peterborough Ontario, about 130 km away, to be at the starting line for 7:30 am. She was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow, days after giving birth to her third daughter, Katerina. Her spine badly damaged from the cancer, Lorraine was in constant pain, but she did not give up. Barely able to walk, she started Team Lorraine to raise money to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Unfortunately, Lorraine’s cancer is back. She will be facing another round of treatment once her levels have reached a certain threshold as determined by her doctors at Princess Margaret.

Thank you again to all our generous sponsors, everyone who ran the 5k route and those who walked with Lorraine for the 10th year in a row. Your support improves the lives of myeloma cancer patients and moves us towards our goal to conquer cancer in our lifetime.

The 5 km walk up University Avenue in downtown Toronto passes The Princess Margaret, a global leader in the fight against cancer and delivering personalized cancer medicine. More than a hospital, The Princess Margaret is the home the fantastic medical team who took our friend Lorraine from suffering with an incurable and terminal disease to a long and happy remission, for which we are all grateful.

However, Lorraine’s remission has ended. The Multiple Myeloma has become active again requiring another round of aggressive treatments. Now more than ever, we need to raise even more dollars to discover new treatments and ultimately a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Please help Team Lorraine:

All contributions make a huge impact and are greatly appreciated.

Team Lorraine at The Princess Margaret

The incredibly dedicated people of Team Lorraine have done it again. Together, they raised over $20,000 in support of cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Even a bit of rain could not dampen the team spirit celebrating another  year with team founder, Lorraine McCallum.

Lorraine was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow, days after giving birth to her third daughter, Katerina. Her spine badly damaged from the cancer, Lorraine was in constant pain, but she did not give up. Barely able to walk, she started Team Lorraine to raise money to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.
