Research is making a difference: we need to find more life saving treatments

Top Five Reasons to Support Team Lorraine in 2013: #1

We need to keep raising money to continue research into life saving treatments and cures

Terry Fox monument in Thunder Bay

Because of research, if Terry Fox were to be diagnosed today for example, he would be much less likely to lose his leg to cancer and he could live to continue the fight.

This is our fifth annual 5K walk in support of Multiple Myeloma research. Walking 5K with/for Lorraine is always a huge morale boost, but the MM5K is really about the research. We need to keep raising money to continue research into life saving treatments and cures.

Over the past four years, our team has raised over $75,000. If we meet our goal this year, Team Lorraine will have funded $100,000 of Multiple Myeloma research at the Princess Margaret. That is a lot of money! So why do we keep asking for more? Is it really possible to cure cancer? Of course it is! Just take a look at the progress that we have made.

The Princess Margaret explains it best:

Thirty years ago, we didn’t really know what cancer was or how to effectively treat it. Today, thanks to research like that going on at The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute, we now know that there are well over 200 types of cancer, and that each type is very different from the others. Today, thanks to research, we have effective screening and treatment for many types of cancer. If Terry Fox were to be diagnosed today for example, he would be much less likely to lose his leg to cancer and he could live to continue the fight. So progress has clearly been made.

Research is key: mutational changes in myeloma cells.

However, research is costly and takes time to have an impact. For example, Herceptin, a drug that was developed at UCLA that benefits patients with one particular sub-type of breast cancer, took more than 10 years to develop and test, and at a cost of well over $200 million and much more to commercialize. More breakthroughs of this kind will be discovered, but we won’t get there without ongoing funding. The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute has a world-class research team in place. However, we need ongoing funding, like that from The Journey To Conquer Cancer- Run or Walk to continue to invest in research and maintain our momentum of discovery, most importantly, to advance Personalized Cancer Medicine.

Believe it! We will conquer cancer in our lifetime.

Every dollar makes a difference, so please help us find a cure:

Together we will conquer cancer in our lifetime. Believe it!

Celebrate our achivement at a post race breakfast

Top Five Reasons to Support Team Lorraine in 2013: #2

Looking for another reason to support Team Lorraine this year? Well look no further than a celebratory post race gathering!

Lorraine after the first annual Team Lorraine MM5K

Lorraine at the breakfast after the first annual Team Lorraine MM5K in 2009.

Every year, Team Lorraine has held a post-race brunch at a restaurant where Lorraine shares her gratitude with us all for helping to find a cure for her cancer. Let’s face it, Lorraine looks fabulous now, but turn your mind back to our first walk in 2009, when Lorraine was still so weak that she was unable to walk the route with us.

She is so grateful for this remission and the extra time it is giving her, but she is living on borrowed time. There is still no cure for Multiple Myeloma.

By joining or sponsoring Team Lorraine, you are supporting innovative, life-extending treatments for this incurable cancer, and the research to find a cure for Multiple Myeloma.

Support innovative new treatments specific to Multiple Myeloma

Top Five Reasons to Support Team Lorraine in 2013: #3

Lorraine is living on borrowed time. She is loving every minute of this remission, but it is just a break from the cancer, not a cure.

Did you know that 2,000 Canadians are newly diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma each year? It may not sound like a lot compared to other cancers, but it is a devastating disease that until recently had no treatment.

Remember when Lorraine was first diagnosed in 2008? She was in constant pain, barely able to walk and her bones were so brittle, they were easily broken. She suffered permanent damage to her spine and was not able to pick up her new born baby. But thanks to an experimental treatment, Lorraine’s cancer was halted. And after several operations, some of the spinal damage was reversed. But she’s living on borrowed time. Lorraine is loving every minute of this remission, but it is just a break from the cancer, not a cure.

The money raised as a member of Team Lorraine funds the Molly and David Bloom Research Chair at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center, a major, international centre for Multiple Myeloma research, on the cutting edge of innovative, life-extending treatments for this treatable, but incurable cancer.

Over the past few years, Bloom Chair Dr. Donna Reece and her team have used funds raised from this MM5K towards improving the outcomes of cancer patients.

In her 2013 annual report, Dr. Reece explains:

There are two routes to pursue the development of new therapies for multiple myeloma. One involves the selection of our Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Myeloma Clinical Research Program as a site for the investigation of new drugs that have been brought into clinical trials by the pharmaceutical industry.

The second, more challenging but more innovative, involves our own development of novel agents that have a solid
laboratory basis for efficacy in a not-for-profit academic setting. This in turn requires 3 critical steps:

  1. Identification of a potential vulnerable target in the myeloma cell that will cause its death
  2. Validation of that target in laboratory models
  3. Introduction of the drug into clinical trials for patients with this disease
Bone Marrow research

Thanks to your generous support, PMHF will be able to obtain patients’ marrow in a more timely manner

Because PMH has been selected as a research centre by pharmaceutical companies, PMH myeloma patients have had access to these agents several years in advance of commercial availability. And when your prognosis is only 3-4 years, every day makes a critical difference.

To find out more about the ways that your support is dramatically changing cancer treamtment in Canada, read the complete report from Dr. Reece.

There are some new treatments which have been very successful in extending lives and hopefully there will soon be a cure. But research is expensive and we need your support.

Team Lorraine will be walking 5k past The Princess Margaret on June 23, 2013, to fund the innovative research taking place here in Canada. Please help us find a cure:

Help us conquer cancer in our lifetime. Believe it!

Salute the Princess Margaret in the inaugural Journey to Conquer Cancer – Run or Walk

Top Five Reasons to Support Team Lorraine in 2013: #4

Princess Margaret HospitalBe a part of history! Join us on June 23 for the inaugural Journey to Conquer Cancer-Run or Walk, a family friendly route that passes by The Princess Margaret offering 5km, 3km and 1km options allowing everyone to BE A PART OF THE JOURNEY.

For the past two years, the MM5K race route did not pass by the hospital and participants didn’t have the opportunity to salute the amazing institution that has extended the life of our beloved Lorraine. But this year, we get to pay tribute to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where groundbreaking research advances new life stabilizing drugs through the Molly and David Bloom Chair. And we get to cheer for the patients at PMH who are fighting for their lives. But best of all, we get to do both with Lorraine walking beside us!

When Lorraine was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008 after giving birth to her third child, her prognosis was only three to seven years. After months of treatments and surgeries, Lorraine founded this team to work towards finding a cure for her disease. She’s now enjoying remission and for that, we should thank the Princess Margaret as we pass by on June 23.

Please help team Lorraine by sponsoring a member of the team or join our team and find sponsors to support your walk. Your generosity enables Princess Margaret Hospital to bring more drugs to market at a faster pace for the benefit of patients. By supporting our walk, you improve the lives of myeloma cancer patients and moves us towards our goal to conquer cancer in our lifetime.

Celebrate a Multiple Myeloma survivor at the super-fun Team Lorraine kick-off party

Top Five Reasons to Support Team Lorraine in 2013: #5

Team Lorraine - reuniting old friendsBurgundy baseball cap: $5. Team t-shirt: $10. Event registration fee: $35. Tea & crumpets: $5. Spending an afternoon with Lorraine: Priceless.

Being a member of Team Lorraine has many rewards. But the biggest reward is celebrating Lorraine; she is living proof that the research we are supporting is making a difference in the lives of those living with Multiple Myeloma.

When Lorraine was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008 after giving birth to her third child, her prognosis was only three to seven years. Unable to hold her new baby, in constant pain and barely able to walk, she would not give up. After many many treatments and surgeries, Lorraine is in remission and getting stronger every day.

For those diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma today, the prognosis is 10 years or more because of the amazing advances made in research for Multiple Myeloma supported by Team Lorraine.

A chance to get together without the burgundy baseball caps.It takes a village to fight cancer, and that village likes to celebrate. The annual walk is not enough for us, so our team gets together before the event to celebrate our survivor, count our blessings and find ways to support ongoing research. Lorraine’s life depends on innovative, life-extending treatments for this treatable, but incurable cancer.

Join Team Lorraine and celebrate “Lady Lorraine” at the Downton Abbey themed kick-off party on Saturday May 11 or sponsor us, and help us find a cure for Multiple Myeloma. B.Y.O.F. (Bring Your Own Footman)

Medals make the difference for junior members of Team Lorraine

Team Lorraine 2012 participant medalsIt is difficult for the younger members of Team Lorraine to make the connection between a walk in the park and finding a cure for Multiple Myeloma. This was our second year holding a virtual event in High Park, away from the buzz of the marathon and other MM5K teams, further distancing us from the cause. So Lorraine suggested that we make medals for the junior participants, similar to those received when we participated in the marathon event.

Artist and Team Lorraine participant, Allyson Payne, accepted the challenge and far exceeded our expectations in creating these unique, handmade medals. But more importantly, the children loved them and were thrilled to be recognized. Their faces beamed with pride as Lorraine personally presented each medal. The medals are now cherished memorabilia of each junior team member.

Team Lorraine medal recipientThere is no height limit or age limit to be a member of Team Lorraine. Every walker helps us to reach our goal: to fund Multiple Myeloma research through The Molly and David Bloom Chair at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The Bloom Chair supports a major, international centre for Multiple Myeloma research and is on the cutting edge of innovative, life-extending treatments for this treatable, but incurable cancer. Big or small, we all make a difference. You can too by sponsoring us at teamlorraine.com/sponsor.
